Service Description
Organizational maintenance, or O-level, is performed by a ship's own crew and involves day-to-day upkeep, simple repairs, and preventive maintenance routines. This is the foundational level of readiness, ensuring that equipment is in good working order and issues are addressed promptly to prevent larger problems. For instance, a sailor conducting a routine check of a pump or a piece of electronic gear is performing organizational maintenance, relying on the ship's internal resources and technical manuals. Intermediate maintenance, or I-level, fills the gap between the day-to-day care provided by the crew and the extensive overhaul work done at naval shipyards. The RMCs, either through their own personnel or by contracting work to private industry, execute this more complex level of maintenance. I-level work is characterized by repairs that require more advanced skills, specialized test equipment, and a higher degree of technical expertise than the crew possesses. The interaction between these two maintenance levels is central to ensure that the fleet remains combat-ready and mission-relevant throughout a ship's entire service life.
